The flier says it all. I saw Axiom MC the other night at the LTJ Bukem show, and he killed it.

Planet of the Drums is coming! There are two Bay Area stops.
On Wednesday, October 22, Planet of the Drums will be making a stop in Sacramento at Barcode Nightclub. Of course we all know that Planet of the Drums includes Dieselboy, Dara, and AK1200. But it wasn’t clear to me if Messinian was still with them. The flier confirms that he’ll be there:
On Friday, October 24, I am a little nervous about whether or not Planet of the Drums is happening at Mighty. There are no details on the event at the Mighty website, just a simple event listing. Also, Dieselboy doesn’t have the event listed on his website. So I emailed the folks at Mighty for a confirmation.
If I get word that POTD isn’t happening in San Francisco, I may have to trek out to Sacramento somehow.
Update: I am less nervous about this after I saw a note on the Compression website: “October 24: Ivry, 2Cents and Colonel at Mighty for POTD.” Not sure how I forgot about seeing this before.
Update 2: And I even found a flier! Woo!

Update 3: I heard back from Mighty. It appears that you can pre-buy your tickets through Sunset Tickets.
One of my favorite drum and bass DJs that I’ve never seen live, LTJ Bukem, is coming to San Francisco on Saturday, October 18 at the Independent. I don’t know anything about MC Conrad. $20 advance, $23 at the door. More info at The Independent website and on Still Doin’ It.

Thanks to Compression for posting a big ‘ol update. I have updated the Upcoming Events sidebar.
I’m especially looking forward to Planet of the Drums on October 24. How can you beat this lineup? Dieselboy, Dara, AK1200, Ivry, Aye~n, Mal, Colonel MC and Audio Angel. All we need now is DJ SS and Messinian.
From “my boy” Issy:
San Francisco knows how to have fun, for sure. This shit gets me so pumped up. Thanks, Issy!
If so, I’d love to hear from you and find out how it was. Hit me up in the comments.
My friend and I headed to The Cellar last night for Compression. Before we got in, we caught some shit from the bouncer who was trying to make us feel stupid for not going in the correct way. This sour point to start our night didn’t affect anything once we went down the stairs.
It took a while to get a decent crowd going. I wasn’t checking the time incessantly but I would venture to say that there were the most people between about 11:30 and 12:30. It was split into two rooms. In the side room there was a beautiful clear DJ booth allowing you to see everything. I really enjoyed standing up here for a few minutes and seeing the DJs do their thing. I was especially impressed a few times. One DJ seemed to put the cue record on and have it mixed in all within ten seconds. Also the skill of some of the DJs to slightly slow or speed up the record with their fingers was amazing. However, the dnb in the side room was a bit more chill. Chill dnb has its place but I came to do some crazy dancing! The main room was where it was at for us. Hard, dirty, grimy dnb pretty much the whole night. There was a constant flow of DJs which made it interesting.
One point of surprise for me was the complete lack of MCs. The flier listed three MCs but I was expecting two since the Compression blog said Colonel MC wouldn’t be there. The tracks and the mixing were so good that they weren’t really missed by most but I was especially looking forward to seeing Audio Angel. I asked one of the DJs and he said that she might come at 12:30 or so. I’d like to see a little more accuracy in the event listings for this community. Hopefully that is something I can help with on this site. Despite the lack of MCs, a man by the name of Daniel was MCing without a mic. I could barely hear him, of course, but just seeing him MC added to the atmosphere for sure.
As for the club itself, I have a few things to say. The most important thing certainly is that there is plenty of room to dance and there are two rooms so you can go back and forth depending on your mood and which DJs and music you like. So they’ve got that down. But this place definitely has a cheerier feel to it than is desired by most for dnb. We need dark walls, low ceilings and exposed pipes. And maybe my main complaint was that the TV was on, tuned to football. Don’t get me wrong, I love me some football. But football and commercials don’t belong at a dnb club, or any dance club for that matter. Turn that shit off!
Overall I would say it is one of the best drum and bass shows I’ve ever been to. I’d like to say it was because of the excellent music and mixing but I should leave open the possibility that I had a such a great time because of the excellent company and my affinity to just let everything loose and dance like I have, literally, never danced before. In reality I am sure it was all three of these elements.
I love me some Compression and I can’t wait for their next event, which is at Underground SF in the Lower Haight on Tuesday, September 30. I will try my hardest to make it there for sure.
I took some pictures of this event. I’ll put them up shortly, should be in the next couple of days including the pictures from Underground SF.
Big shout outs go to Mags, Daniel, Izzy and Mary. You guys are awesome!
Just a quick round-up of last night’s Bassism event at UndergroundSF. Well, it surely wasn’t drum and bass! All dub, all night, even though their event listing included techno and dnb. That (major) complaint aside, I enjoyed myself. Most of the beats were spot on and danceable and all of the DJs expertly and flawlessly mixed between tracks. The highlight of the evening was when a trio DJed, played the trombone and played the bass guitar at the same time. It was a combination I have never seen before.
Visually, the back patio was spectacular. There is some excellent graffiti there, which I will post pictures of later.
Tonight, I am off to Compression at The Cellar. (See the previous post for details.) I’m very much looking forward to checking out Audio Angel (MC) again.
